Pilates Classes and Equipment
What is a comprehensive Pilates equipment class?
Your complete Pilates workout format includes work on the mat, reformer, or tower, and sometimes additional equipment (Wunda Chair or barrels) or props, to best support overall movement. We include Joe's original apparatus, designed as a supportive structure to help the body learn the method safely and efficiently. You can enjoy improved efficacy and progress. You'll be offered the complete comprehensive method over time.
Do you offer Reformer Pilates in Madison, WI?
Yes—Purple Door Pilates offers reformer-based Pilates in Madison, WI, along with a comprehensive approach that may include other apparatus over time. Reformer work is a key foundation of our teaching, and instructors provide guidance on springs, setup, and modifications.
What’s the difference between Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates is performed on the floor using bodyweight and sometimes small props. Reformer Pilates uses spring-based resistance to support and challenge movement in different ways—often making it easier to scale for beginners, and more specific goals are most easily addressed on the reformer and work on other apparatus.
How many people are in a small group class?
Class size varies by format, but our group equipment classes are intentionally small so instructors can provide more individualized cueing and adjustments. Classes will usually have 3-6 participants. Our Introductory class is limited to a maximum of 5 participants.
Is Purple Door Pilates a classical or modern Pilates studio?
Purple Door Pilates blends strong classical Pilates foundations with modern movement education and thoughtful modifications. Our instructors teach with respect for the traditional method while adapting sessions to real bodies, real goals, and today’s understanding of wellness and rehabilitation.
Beginner Pilates & Private Training
Are your Pilates classes beginner-friendly?
Yes. Many of our classes are appropriate for beginners, and we can help you choose the right starting level. If you are new to Pilates, we recommend attending our Introduction to Pilates class, or if you’d like more personalized guidance at the beginning, an Initial Consult is the best first step.
Do you offer private Pilates sessions?
Yes. We offer private Pilates sessions (and duets by request) for clients who want individualized attention, tailored programming, or more focused progress.
Can Pilates help with back pain or other conditions?
Pilates can be a supportive way to build strength, stability, and body awareness, and many clients use it alongside other care. If you’re managing pain, recovering post-PT, or working around a condition, we recommend a private session. You can reach out by email so we can suggest the best class options for your specific needs.
What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates for whole-body wellness?
Reformer Pilates supports full-body strength, posture, mobility, and core stability through controlled, low-impact resistance. Many clients at Purple Door Pilates in Madison, WI, find it helps relieve tension, improve strength and stamina, and build long-term movement confidence.
Do you offer an intro option for new Pilates clients?
Yes. New clients are welcome to start with an Initial Consult ($65) or our Newcomer Group Class Package (3 classes for $75). These options are designed to help beginners feel confident with the equipment and teaching style before committing to a longer package.

What to Bring and What to Wear
What should I bring to a Pilates class?
Consider bringing a water bottle. You most likely won’t be drinking as much water as you would during an aerobic workout, but you'll still want to have water available and ensure you're well-hydrated before your session.
What should I wear to Pilates class?
-
Avoid tie-backs and belts. Tie-back tops can be uncomfortable when you're lying on your back. Ties, belts, drawstrings, and tassels can get caught in the springs of Pilates equipment.
-
Eschew embellishments. Choose workout wear that's free of metal or plastic adornments. Zippers, buckles, clasps, buttons, or trimmings are not allowed as they can severely damage the upholstered Pilates equipment. Repairs are costly and can cause downtime for the studio.
-
Opt for unscented products. We request that clients refrain from wearing strong scents. Many people are sensitive to perfumes and strongly scented deodorants, lotions, and sprays.
-
Remove accessories or jewelry. Long necklaces, belts, and dangling bracelets can be distracting and dangerous if they get caught in the equipment.
-
Skip shoes. Pilates has traditionally been done barefoot—no fancy footwear is necessary. If you prefer to wear socks, buy a pair with grippy bottoms beforehand or at our studio to ensure your feet don't slip; we have some on hand to lend if need be.
-
Tame your mane. If your hair is long, tie it back so it's out of your face.
-
Think form-fitting, not baggy. Choose workout clothing that's stretchy and as form-fitting as is personally comfortable.
